Root canal treatment is an alternative to extraction of an infected tooth from the oral cavity. Hence it restores the normal functions of teeth like chewing, esthetics, speech and others. It is regularly done in primary (milk) teeth also but the materials used to fill the root canals are different. In this treatment the infected pulp of the tooth is removed, filled with a biocompatible material (resorbable) and the tooth is crowned with stainless steel to prevent fracture of the tooth while it is functional.
